Public Lecture: Architecture and the Right to Housing in New York
Deborah Gans and Samuel Stein with Gabriela Rendón, Miguel Robles-Durán, and Karen Kubey
New School University Center, New York | October 09, 2025
The right to housing—in New York and globally—isn’t just a political, legal, and economic issue, but also an architectural one. What does the right to housing mean in practice? And how can designers contribute? This lecture and discussion with architects, planners, and housing justice advocates explored how design and policy can confront the housing crisis and reimagine a more just, inclusive city.
Deborah Gans, Founder and Principal Architect of Gans and Company, presented "Trust the Land," and Samuel Stein, Housing Policy Analyst at The Community Service Society of New York, presented "Fight! Fight! Fight! Housing is a Human Right?” Their talks were followed by a conversation with Gabriela Rendón, Founding Director, Parsons The New School Housing Justice Lab, Miguel Robles-Durán, Associate Professor of Urbanism, Parsons The New School and our Lab’s founding director, Karen Kubey.
